Albany Pinebush Preserve Trailhead #8 Great Dune

Albany Pinebush Preserve Trailhead #8 Great Dune

Description :

Diverse forest communities, pitch pine-scrub oak barrens, and native prairies adorn rolling sand dunes including the Great Dune that is over one mile long and as much as 75 feet tall. The red trail crosses a southern portion of the Kaikout Kill, whose steep slopes and damp floor support dense masses of ferns and other moisture loving plants. Wild blue lupine wildflowers, beautiful in their own right, and the exclusive food for the caterpillar life stage of the endangered Karner blue butterfly, can be seen along some of the trails in this area in May and June. Parking can be found at the end of Willow Street where a small parking lot is available. Often deep puddles and ruts form in the spring here so parking along the side.
